Spotlight: FARO Focus i.1, and SCENE 2027 that cleans the cloud
FARO introduced Focus i.1 scanners and Rovi i.1 at INTERGEO. SCENE 2027 promises faster processing and an AI glass filter.
Yesterday’s unused story was a wearable scanner. The leftover INTERGEO hardware is the static and everyday end of the same week: FARO INSIGHT’s new Focus i.1 scanners, Rovi i.1 and SCENE 2027.
That is a capture-and-process change, not another AI demo. Scan-to-BIM teams already own a terrestrial scanner. The usual waste is not the walk around the site. It is the hours of registration, the glass bloom on a curtain wall, and the argument about whether the cloud is good enough to model from. FARO’s claim, posted 15 September from Korntal-Münchingen and repeated by Engineering.com and GeoConnexion, is a new Focus pair plus a SCENE release that is supposed to make the cloud usable faster.
What actually changed
Focus i.1 and Focus i.1 X are terrestrial laser scanners. FARO lists object scanning accuracy up to 0.9 mm, faster colourised scanning, and a new subscription path into Sphere XG and SCENE. Do not read 0.9 mm as “the model will sit 0.9 mm on the grid.” Object accuracy is a vendor figure for a target. Project accuracy is whether that hanger lands on the control you already trust.
The outdoor unit is i.1 X. It adds a mountable GNSS/RTK receiver and a 400-metre range. That is the useful sentence for site and civil work: georeference at the instrument instead of hoping a later transform holds. Indoor plant rooms still need the short-range habit you already use. Range is not a reason to skip checkpoints.
SCENE 2027 is the processing story. FARO says large-project point-cloud generation should fall from hours to minutes, and that an AI filter will remove glass and mirror reflections. Those are future-tense claims in the launch note. Confirm a build number and a licence before you write them into a method. If the glass filter holds on a curtain-wall elevation, that is a real modelling gain. If it also eats a stainless handrail, it is a setting, not a miracle.
Rovi i.1 is the everyday package, built with Manifold Tech. The product page describes a hybrid Visual-and-LiDAR SLAM walk-and-scan unit, cloud processing in Sphere XG, and a compare-to-BIM workflow. Capture is listed at 200,000 points per second. Optional GNSS is listed at about 1 cm. Software is a three-year Sphere XG and SCENE subscription in Essential, Professional or Enterprise tiers. FARO is unusually direct on the limit: if the job needs survey-grade tolerances, use Focus or Orbis.
The rest of the note is later. A cloud-to-cloud path with Flyability’s Inspector Online is meant to pull Elios 3 confined-space scans into the FARO stack. IPX would let teams order as-built BIM from inside Sphere XG. A Qbitec link is expected later in 2026. None of those is a reason to change this week’s register.
What a BIM or VDC lead should do
Do not rewrite the scan-to-BIM standard because the scanner is new. Say what the cloud is for, set a tolerance, lock a coordinate system, and keep a read-only source.
If the firm already runs Focus and SCENE, the test is processing, not a brochure. Take one existing job with glass and a large registration. When SCENE 2027 is actually on a machine, time the project cloud, then look at a curtain wall and a polished surface. Ask whether the glass bloom is gone and whether the geometry you model from is still there.
If the firm needs a walking record for progress or RFQs, Rovi is the unit to trial on a non-sensitive floor. Compare it to the Focus cloud you already trust. If a 15 mm hanger disappears, keep the tripod.

Frequently asked questions
What did FARO announce?
On 15 September 2026, FARO INSIGHT introduced Focus i.1 and Focus i.1 X terrestrial laser scanners and the Rovi i.1 walk-and-scan package. The same note announces SCENE 2027, a new Sphere XG and SCENE subscription model, and later connections for Flyability Elios 3 data, an IPX scan-to-BIM service, and Qbitec.
Is 0.9 mm the accuracy of a project cloud?
No. That is FARO’s stated object scanning accuracy for the new Focus units. It is not a closed global tolerance. Keep checkpoints, a coordinate statement and a model-to-cloud check.
Is SCENE 2027 shipping now?
The 15 September note describes what the release will do. It does not give a download date. Treat the hours-to-minutes claim and the glass filter as announced until you can run them on a live job.
When should a team use Rovi i.1 instead of Focus?
FARO positions Rovi for everyday progress and RFQ records, and Focus or Orbis when the job needs survey-grade tolerances. Rovi’s own page says optional GNSS can reach about 1 cm. That is still a vendor figure until you close it on control.
